The Death Knell of Division
Romans 15:5,6 All patience and encouragement come from God. And I pray that God will help you all agree with each other, as Christ Jesus wants. Then you will all be joined together. And all together you will give glory to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ accepted you, so you should accept each other. This will bring honour to God.
There’s nothing quite so ugly as people in power playing power politics; those who should be labouring in the best interests of those in their care, instead fighting and backstabbing out of pure self-interest.
We’ve all seen it happen way too often. Disunity is the absolute death knell of any political party. They can’t expect to win an election if infighting is tearing them apart.
That ugliness though doesn’t just raise its head in the political arena. You see it in local sporting organisations or resident committees managing apartment complexes. I’ve been involved in a few of those over the years and the nastiness that people carry on with is breathtaking.
And sadly, you see it in the church too – this institution that’s meant to represent Jesus to a lost and hurting world. I attended a church some years ago (not for long, I have to tell you) that each Sunday felt the need to criticise yet another denomination or tradition different from their own from the pulpit. Seriously? Listen up:
Romans 15:5,6 All patience and encouragement come from God. And I pray that God will help you all agree with each other, as Christ Jesus wants. Then you will all be joined together. And all together you will give glory to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ accepted you, so you should accept each other. This will bring honour to God.
Our job isn’t to win theological or ecclesial arguments. Our job together is to bring glory to God. And just in case you feel the urge to argue, remember this … Christ accepted you, so you should accept each other.
That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
