God’s Family

Hebrews 10:23-25 We must hold on to the hope we have, never hesitating to tell people about it. We can trust God to do what he promised. We should think about each other to see how we can encourage each other to show love and do good works. We must not quit meeting together, as some are doing. No, we need to keep on encouraging each other. This becomes more and more important as you see the Day getting closer.

Let’s be honest. Church can be a pain in the neck sometimes. Really, it can. There are difficult people there, the preacher ain’t always as good as he should be and that worship music they play … well, really!!!

Years ago when I was in the Army, I was stationed at a somewhat remote ammunition depot. It was a cold, miserable hole and its only saving grace was a rather lavish officers’ mess with a huge roaring fireplace. We’d often burn coal in the fire, and every now and then a red-hot piece of coal would tumble out onto the large piece of stone set into the floor in front of the fireplace (presumably for that very reason).

Within just a few minutes this burning hot, glowing red piece of coal would turn black. Within half an hour you could pick it up. And within an hour it was stone cold. Right there you have the picture of the Christian who neglects meeting with other Christians as, in this day and age, so many are prone to do.

As difficult as it can be sometimes, God’s family is about support and encouragement and inspiration. It’s about making sure that we don’t grow cold in our faith. It’s about making sure that the fire that’s burning in our heart for Jesus doesn’t go out.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
