The Liberty of Obedience

Romans 14:8 If we live, we are living for the Lord. And if we die, we are dying for the Lord. So living or dying, we belong to the Lord.

Obedience and freedom are two ideas that seem to live at opposite ends of the street. Obedience sounds like rules, limits, “you can’t,” while freedom sounds like open fields, “do whatever you want.” But in truth, one without the other always leads to slavery – to sin, to chaos, to self. Real freedom is found in obedience to the right Master.

Brother Lawrence was a 17th-century French monk who lived under strict monastic rules – set hours for prayer, silence, humble work in the kitchen. At first, he felt confined, but somewhere between scrubbing pots and whispering prayers, he discovered joy.

In total obedience, he found total freedom – his spirit unchained, his soul at rest in God’s presence.

Like Brother Lawrence, the Apostle Paul understood that belonging to Christ isn’t bondage – it’s liberation. When we hand over the keys to our will, we’re no longer ruled by fear or circumstance. That truth dismantles the world’s illusion that freedom means doing whatever feels good. Real freedom is knowing who you belong to. It’s discovering that obedience isn’t a cage but a calling – one that aligns your heart with God’s purpose and fills even the smallest act with eternal meaning.
